The 16 Essential Yorkshire Terrier Supplies to Get You Started

Home Supplies

1. Playpen

Puppies get into everything. While your Yorkie puppy will be tiny, he can still cause a lot of mischief and potentially even harm himself. While you will want to give as much attention as you can to your latest family member, there will be times when you need to leave him unattended. A playpen provides a safe and controlled area for your puppy, and it also gives them their own space—somewhere to call their own.

As your puppy matures, this configurable playpen lets you shut off certain areas of the house. This is ideal for when you want to keep your dog in or out of a particular spot.

2. Dog Bed

Yorkies typically enjoy spending time sitting on their owner’s lap, but a good quality dog bed is important. A bed provides a comfortable spot for naps and for nighttime sleep. It also gives security and a sense of belonging. It should be warm for winter nights and cool for summer evenings, and because of the diminutive size of your Yorkie, the bed should be equally small.

This hexagon bed has a soft polyester filling and is machine washable, so it’s easy to maintain and it will continue to look good.

3. Blanket

The ideal accompaniment is a warm and cozy dog blanket. Yorkies are somewhat susceptible to cold temperatures, especially when they are sleeping at night. A blanket not only provides warmth, but as your dog becomes accustomed to sleeping on it, they will become attached to it. The blanket will give security as well as comfort.

This waterproof blanket has a soft cover and waterproof liner, so it can prevent damage to the bed or to the sofa if your pooch has any accidents.

Food And Treats

4. Bowls

Yorkies are small dogs, and Yorkie puppies are even smaller. Find food and water bowls that are an appropriate size for your new addition. Too small and you will have to keep filling them through the day and there’s a greater risk of food debris getting fired across the room. Too large and your puppy will struggle to get to their food and may fall in the water bowl.

Adult Yorkies will eat up to half a cup of dry food a day, over several meals, so these stainless-steel bowls with a 2-cup capacity allow some room for food to move around and can hold wet or dry food and water.

5. Puppy and Dog Food

Good nutrition is important for any breed of dog. A well-balanced diet ensures that your dog is fit, healthy, energetic, and less likely to develop certain conditions and illnesses. Yorkies have different nutritional requirements to other breeds, primarily because of their small size but also because of their predisposition to diseases, like hypoglycemia.

Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Food is specifically formulated for Yorkshire Terriers. The small kibble is ideally sized for the breed’s small snout, and its primary ingredient is chicken. It also contains omega fatty acids and biotin to promote good coat condition. It is suitable for Yorkies up to the age of 10 months.

6. Healthy Treats

Food treats are effective as a training aid and it’s always nice to give your dog a tasty treat. However, the size of your Yorkie means that even small treats will have an impact on their daily diet, so you need to consider the calorific content and the ingredients when feeding treats.

Wellness Soft Puppy Bites are lamb-flavored treats. They contain natural, whole ingredients like carrots and apples for their antioxidant properties, as well as flaxseed for its omega-3 content.

7. Toys

Toys provide mental stimulation and physical exercise. They also promote a strong bond between you and your puppy when you play with them together. There are many different toys and dozens of different styles. For a Yorkie, you need a small toy to prevent damage or injury and to ensure the toy is accessible, but small toys can still be fun and beneficial.

The Chuckit! Ultra Rubber Ball Tough Dog Toy is a pack of two rubber balls designed for small mouths. The ball floats on water, and the rubber is durable enough to cope well with your Yorkie’s sharp teeth.

Grooming

8. Brush and Comb

Yorkies have silky hair that will continue growing. This means that the breed needs regular trimming, typically visiting a groomer every month to 2 months. This not only keeps the coat in good condition and prevents knotting, but a groomer will trim the hair around the eyes and ears making your dog more comfortable and allowing them to see and hear unrestricted by hair growth.

In between cuts, you should brush your Yorkshire Terrier to prevent hair from becoming tangled and difficult to manage. Brushing can also help develop a strong bond between dog and owner.

The PetBrush by WetBrush is a detangler designed for small breeds. It can be used on wet or dry hair, and it loosens tangles rather than pulling at them, making the experience better for your dog and you.

9. Toothbrush

Yorkshire Terriers typically live around 15 years. As with any animal, bad teeth can become debilitating as a dog ages. Chewing becomes uncomfortable and a dog with dental decay can experience pain even when they’re not eating. It is important that you brush your dog’s teeth three times a week or more.

Your Yorkie only has a small mouth, and many dogs dislike the sensation of having their teeth brushed. A toothbrush with a small head can minimize the distress and make the process easier. H&H Pet Cats & Small Dog Toothbrushes come in a pack of four and are ideally sized for your purposes.

10. Nail Clipper

Dogs don’t like having toothbrushes placed in their mouth and many are not keen on having their claws trimmed, but long claws can also be uncomfortable. How often you need to trim a dog’s claws depends on how quickly they grow and also whether your dog walks on abrasive surfaces like concrete. In any case, you will need to trim claws regularly, and having a good set of clippers is important.

Quality clippers will cut the claw quickly, minimizing the potential distress. Safari Professional Nail Trimmers have a double-bladed cutter that makes quick work of claws. They also have a textured grip, so they are easy to hold and use.

Walking Supplies

11. Collar

An adult Yorkie weighs around 8–9 pounds, which means they need a collar that is around 10 inches in length. The collar can hold ID tags in case your best friend ever gets lost, and it attaches to leashes, harnesses, dog car seats, and even coats. It should be comfortable, waterproof, and easy to use.

The Frisco Solid Nylon Dog Collar comes in extra small, for dogs with an 8–12-inch neck, and a good variety of colors. The nylon is strong and has a D-ring for attaching a leash. It can be cleaned with a mild detergent and is waterproof.

12. Leash

You will also need a good quality leash. Yorkies are small but they can pull a lot for a dog of their size. The leash also needs to be a reasonable length so that it reaches your dog’s neck without restricting their movement too much.

The PetSafe Premier Nylon Dog Leash is made of hardwearing and waterproof nylon with a clip that easily attaches to the D-ring of a collar. It is narrow and lightweight in the hand, and there’s a choice of colors to match your dog’s collar, coat, or mood.

13. Harness

Yorkies like to investigate, and this can lead to pulling while on the leash. A harness can help prevent choking and posture problems caused by excessive pulling. It should also be comfortable and safe for regular wear, as well as waterproof and lightweight.

The Headlight Harness LED Light Dog Harness is lightweight and durable, and its adjustable straps ensure a good fit. But it stands out because it has an LED headlight that shines down from your dog’s chest, lighting the way for you and your pup.

14. ID Tags

It is recommended that all owners have their dogs chipped because it really does make it easier to identify the owner of an escaped dog. However, one of the most effective ways to ensure that your dog is returned quickly and safely is to have a physical ID tag on their collar as well.

The Frisco Personalized Dog & Cat ID Tag is small enough to be unobtrusive for your dog and it can be customized to include your dog’s name and your name and address.

15. Car Seat

Whether you regularly take your dog out on day trips in the car or the only time they see the interior of a vehicle is to visit the vets, a car seat makes every journey easier and safer.

The K&H Pet Products Bucket Booster Pet Seat attaches to the seatbelt to keep it securely in place and has tethers that attach to your dog’s collar or harness to ensure that they don’t jump out of the seat and roam around the car. Easy to fit and with a machine washable cover, it will make car journeys easier.

16. Coat

Your dog needs regular walks, regardless of the weather and conditions. During the summer, you may need to walk early in the morning or late at night when the sidewalk is not so hot. However, it can be difficult to avoid rain and cold, no matter the time of day. A dog coat will protect your dog from the rain and can help keep them warm.

The GF Pet Neon Reversible Dog Raincoat is made from a neon fabric which makes your dog easier to see. It is waterproof and even includes a waterproof hood that is easily attached and removed. The bungee cord design means that it will precisely fit the contours of your dog’s body for a comfortable fit, too.
